Today I would like to talk about the group Brown Eyed Girls 브라운 아이드 걸스. They have
been on the Kpop music charts since 2006 when they debuted.
They are one of the longest running female groups with the original members,
although they each have started on a solo path. They started doing R&B and
have developed more towards Electronic Pop.
The four members are (from left to right) Park Hyo Jin (Narsha 나르샤) then Son Ga In (Gain나르샤)
who is the maknae, then we have Jo Mi Hye (Miryo 미료) and finally the leader Kim Hyo Jin (Jea 제아 ).
The video/song named "Abracadabra" 아브라카다브라 is still one of their most popular even
though it was released in 2009. The song speaks of a girl who lost her man
and is willing to do anything, even turn into a bad person of sorts to get him back. The bad she
talks about is casting spells as if she is someone who practices Voodoo. She
repeatedly asks if he loves her, (meaning the other girl) or if you love me. It
sounds to me like she is possessed by him, as in “fatal attraction”. Although it doesn’t say in the lyrics the
video set is that of him sleeping or under a spell and waking up to find himself
handcuffed to the bed with a nasty surprise about to happen. If she can’t have
him no one will. In the final scene, it may be the other women she is after
with another spell.
One set is that of an apartment
with the above mentioned bed as the focal point. Adding to the element of the
triangle is scenes of passion with our spell-caster and her dog on her way to
them. Perhaps it’s her animal companion that many of the occults often have. Another
scene is just a plain white room with the contrasting black outfit of the ladies
and their backup dancers. This is where they perform a rather complex dance
routine including the signature move of
the song, a simple but provocative hip sway. There are a
few minor sets such as one of the ladies in a cage of sorts and another of a
woman in a chair with televisions all around, maybe signifying she sees all. The sound track itself is a danceable electro
pop beat. This could be another Kpop song that will grow on you.
Until next time
